OUR HISTORY
BRIEF HISTORY OF IJESA PEOPLE
The Ijesas are a sub-ethnicity of the Yorubas of South-West Nigeria. Ilesa is the largest town and historic cultural capital of the Ijesa people and is home to a kingdom of the same name, ruled by an Oba locally styled as the Owa Obokun Adimula.
Ijesa land presently covers six Local Government Areas in Osun State of Nigeria, which includes Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Atakumosa West, Atakumosa East, Oriade, and Obokun.
Modern Ilesa is a major collecting point for the export of cocoa and a traditional cultural centre for the Ijesa branch of the Yoruba people. Palm oil and kernels, yams, cassava, corn (maize), pumpkins, cotton, and kola nuts are collected for the local market.
